Welcome to the Foreign Service! You are about to embark on the first of many moves in your Foreign Service career. The purpose of this memorandum is to provide you with basic information you will need before you actually report for duty. We hope this will help ease your transition.
A Foreign Service life will offer many unknowns, which are part of the adventure. What you can expect is a life very different from what you have had before, and a change of locations every one to three years. Each time, at least to some degree, you will have to re-establish your identity in your new location.
Advance of Pay: Up to three months' salary (minus certain deductions as designated by the agency) may be advanced when an employee is assigned to a foreign post. An advance of pay may also be authorized for medical emergencies. Repayment varies by agency; the State Department maximum is 18 pay periods; the DOD maximum is 26 pay periods. See DSSR.
